Sonohysterogram

What is s Sonohysterogram?

It is a test in which saline (salt water) is injected through your cervix and up into your uterus. By using the saline, the cavity of the uterus can be seen better with ultrasound. This test helps to find out if there are any polyps, fibroids, adhesions, or other abnormalities in the uterine cavity. It can help determine if your uterus has an abnormal shape.

To book your appointment:

Please phone day 1 of your menstrual cycle to book the test. You may reach the clinic at 519-650-0011 and speak to one of our receptionists to book the appointment. The procedure will be done between cycle day 6-11. Please do not have unprotected intercourse until after this test is done.

Day of the Procedure:

Please come to the clinic for your procedure at least 15minutes before your procedure. You will need a full bladder on the day of your procedure, please drink the equivalent of two 500ml water bottles or 3 8oz glasses of water, finishing an hour before your appointment. Please take 2 ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) 30 minutes prior to the test. ****Note: Advil or Motrin should not be taken if you have an allergy to aspirin****

During the test:

You will lie on an examination table with your feet in the stirrups. The doctor will put a speculum into the vagina. The cervix will first be cleansed. A thin catheter will be passed through your cervix and held in place with a small balloon. There may be some cramping when the catheter is placed. Saline is injected through the catheter into your uterus while a transvaginal ultrasound scan is performed.  Some women may experience minor camping during the procedure similar to menstrual cramps.

After the test:

You may have spotting and water draining from your vagina for 1-2 days. The fluid is the saline used during the test. It is recommended that you have soomeone with you to drive you home, in case you are not feeling up to driving.
