Artificial Insemination in Ontario

At ONE Fertility Kitchener Waterloo, we provide our patients with comprehensive fertility treatments, including artificial insemination, using the most advanced science to ensure quality and safety.

There are many benefits of artificial insemination, particularly for men and women who struggle with infertility, for same-sex couples hoping to get pregnant, and for women who do not have a male partner but wish to conceive.

Below is a breakdown of the intrauterine insemination (IUI) and therapeutic donor sperm insemination (TDI) procedures we offer at our clinic.

The Artificial Insemination Process

Artificial insemination is the process of inserting semen directly into a woman’s womb with the purpose of fertilizing an egg. At ONE Fertility Kitchener Waterloo, we provide artificial insemination services in Ontario, including the following two procedures:

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is the most common form of artificial insemination. This involves using the male partner’s sperm or donor sperm and medically inserting it into the female’s cervix using a very thin, flexible catheter.

For the best results, IUI occurs shortly before a woman ovulates, as fertility is highest during this point in the menstrual cycle. At ONE Fertility Kitchener Waterloo, we will use ovulation kits, ultrasound, and blood tests to determine the optimum time for intrauterine insemination.

The male partner will need to provide a sample of his semen, which can be collected through masturbation, or after sexual intercourse using a specially made collection condom. Once the semen sample has been provided, we will wash the sperm to remove elements that could interfere with fertilization.

Typically, the sperm will come from a partner, but in cases of same-sex relationships, single parenthood, or where the male partner has infertility, women may choose to use donated sperm.

Intrauterine insemination is short and relatively painless and can be compared to getting a Pap smear. As an added care we use ultrasound to determine the precise location of the soft catheter before it sperm is gently released into the womb.

Therapeutic Donor Sperm Insemination (TDI)

Therapeutic donor sperm insemination (TDI) is the process of using semen donated from voluntary donors. At ONE Fertility Kitchener Waterloo, we work with some of the best donor agencies and sperm banks in Ontario to provide our patients with a large selection of donors, so that they can choose a donor based on physical attributes, cultural background, and physiological traits.

All semen samples are thoroughly screened, as per Health Canada’s requirements. At ONE Fertility Kitchener Waterloo, we stand by our TDI process and offer our patients the flexibility to ship and store their donor samples at our clinic once they have been purchased.
